Description

Description 1962 Amphicar 770 You will be noticed and make friends on the water in this Bright Red with white convertible top Amphicar. There were less than 4000 built between 1960 and 1965 so these are very rare cars. This one is a little older professional restoration with new interior, newer convertible top, newer boot, new medallions, strong engine, rebuilt carburerator, complete fuel system, good wheel cylinders and brakes. Very nice cosmetically and mechanically. It is a must see car to appreciate. This 1962 restored Amphicar 770 drives like it should and it does float. This vehicle was done right with a quality repaint and all new rubbers and tires. Runs as if it were new. The last vehicle of this quality sold at Barrett-Jackson for 125k. It is comfortable enough to drive 500 miles a day. Amphicar cost $5MM to design in the late 1950's. It is totally watertight. The engine is in the rear, the same as used in the Triumph Herald. 1147CC 43HP, transmission drives rear wheels through unique land/water gearbox. Many Amphicar employees came from Borgward and there are many parts in common between the cars. Much of the braking system and suspension is Mercedes. The transmission internals are Porsche 356 as are some parts of the fuel system. The Amphicar Corporation was owned by the Quandt Group who also owned, and still own, a controlling share of BMW. Amphicar is great in the snow, better than many 4x4s with 10 inches of ground clearance, a totally flat bottom and narrow rear wheels give tremendous traction and ability. To date no one has managed to improve on the original Amphicar. The last two companies to attempt production of Amphibious vehicles were Hobbycar of France and AmphiRanger of Germany. The production was always small scale/build to order, but it's sad that the factories finally closed in 1996. - Amphicar.com Powered by a correct 1147 CC 4 cylinder 4 Speed manual transmission for land use Newer props and seals keep it moving and afloat in the water Finished in Bright Red with White top and matching interior including front seat belts The tires are 165/80R13 whitewall radials New Navigation Light mounted Fog Horn is cowl mounted Outside rear view mirror on the drivers side There is an original AM radio in the dash with an aftermarket stereo mounted underneath This rare Amphicar 770 is water tight and will give you years of cruising and floating pleasure
